How to make a grocery list (for your husband)

Normally, it is me who do the grocery for the house. However, given the lockdown restrictions at this time, there’s only one bearer of the quarantine pass. The pass that allows one family member to go out and to buy for essentials. In our household, that’s just got to be my husband.

My husband is very much willing to take on this task, but I get A LOT of calls and messages before he completes it (this is why he makes sure to bring his battery pack before leaving the house haha). And so we improve how I make a grocery list for him, taking in consideration he’s usual complains, I mean suggestions:

  • There’s got to be a GROCERY LIST even if it’s just <5 items.
  • For meat & poultry, got to indicate kg and the type of cut
  • For seafood, got to list alternatives (if it’s not looking fresh or it’s not available)
  • For fruits and veggies, got to be clear if your count is in piece or kilo (you don’t want to have a lot of stock)
  • For other food, got to have a brand and the count (indicate other brand preference, if it’s a must buy)
  • For non food, got to mention the correct pack size (in ml or g), don’t say small or big (trust me, it’s relative)

So off he goes, carrying this list. There are some reminders I keep on repeating to him on grocery days:

  1. Wear mask at anytime, outside
  2. Practice social distancing
  3. Touch as few things as possible
  4. Sanitize as soon as you enter the house
  5. If it took > 2hrs outside, take a bath

It’s funny how my husband does the grocery now but I really appreciate him. With moms, doing double shift this ECQ with balancing domestic work and working from home, homeschooling kids and caring for elders, we can be feeling maxed out. This is the time we need our men to step up and help. Lucky me to be with someone who’s willing and able to. I know it’s not the case for all. I am hoping and wishing that you have some help by your side too at this time, be it your mom/dad, a sibling, a relative, a friend, or your children. May you gather all the strength and grace. God bless your family.
