Expect nothing.

Appreciate everything.

Can we not even feel anxious? No expectation means no disappointment right? I think it’s just human to expect, but let’s put it in perspective.

I have experienced two scenarios today on this, at work and at home.

At work. A partner was not able to deliver the expected results. First, I checked if the expectations were aligned at the start of the engagement. I worked in understanding where the gaps are so we can identify the areas that needs to be improved. I know focusing on just the expectation will cause tension. So I also tried to understand what worked, so we can appreciate them. In doing these, kept positivity in the room and the team motivated to work on the improvements.

At home. I expected my husband to pick up laundry but he forgot. I took a deep breath and walked to the kitchen. Then I noticed dinner was prepared and the dishes on the sink were washed. So, I went to see and thank my husband. He said I looked very busy at work and need to relax that’s why he bought dinner. Bonus, he even got me a Coke. Imagine if I focused on my expectation and failed to appreciate the other things, I could’ve ruined the evening.

So there, I think I can summarize today’s life lesson in two points. And I’m leaving it here for reflection.

In matters of improvement, keep your expectation high and your appreciation even higher

In matters of contentment, keep your appreciation high and your expectation low
